German: Deckungsbeitrag. The  contribution margin is the difference between sales revenues and variable costs. It is supposed to cover the fixed costs and the desired insome. The  contribution margin may be calculated per product or for the business in total. Besides this basic definition there are other definitions in use, such as the difference from sales revenues minus material costs or the costs of a specific product line, business unit, customer group, etc.
